Walking the Talk: Teen Spirit’s Night of Resilience

Posted on: 26th June 2014

Last week, Teen Spirit hosted a ‘Walk the Talk’ carousel night, putting into practice what we’ve been discussing through our past month’s theme of resilience.  With different workshops focusing on the diverse challenges that members are facing, they were challenged to ‘Walk the Talk’ and try out new skills to cope with life’s more difficult moments.

The sessions explored how to be resilient when interacting with each other and how to build emotional resilience in the face of life’s problems:

  • ‘Safe-Talk’ run by THT focused on discussing and enacting the best ways of HIV disclosure.
  • ‘Know Your Rights’ informed members about how to stay on the right side of the law and to confidently assert their rights in tricky situations
  • ‘The Island’ gave the scenario of a sinking life-boat and challenged members to reflect on their personality traits whilst working effectively as a team
  • Inspired by Kid President’s ‘Pep-talk’, members made their own pep-talk videos thinking more positively and overcoming obstacles
  • The ‘Tattoo Shop’ uncovered our hidden sides, identifying words or symbols to represent our inner selves, which could be displayed on the outside like a tattoo
  • ‘The Wall’ presented challenging and unpleasant scenarios, which members had to overcome by painting solutions in brightly coloured paint all over the basement wall!

At the end of the evening, the entire group congregated in the basement to see what everyone had written on the wall. We then created a joint poem which you can read below:

Embrace the positive friends around you
Dedication helps you so don’t give up
Share leadership and teamwork
You are good enough

However much effort it takes in the beginning, it will be worth it in the end
Focus on one thing and the rest will follow
Don’t hate
Don’t worry about what other people think

Be fierce
Be brave
Be yourself, everyone else is taken
Faith, consistency and hard work

Chose the positive path
Don’t hate yourself
Pray and everything is going to be alright

Passion is everything
No mercy
There is always light at the end of the tunnel
Never give up

Stay true to yourself
Just be yourself
I am who I am
Courage always courage

Think positive
Stop and think
Speak from the heart
When life is hard don’t say ‘why me’, say ‘try me’
