Body & Soul – a building with a big heart

Posted on: 19th October 2016

Becca Brown runs Brave, the social enterprise initiative at Body & Soul that includes venue hire. Here she explains why Body & Soul is a building with a big heart.

____________

What is Body & Soul’s Brave programme all about?

Brave is a social enterprise – in other words, it’s a business venture for social good. We make money by hiring out the spaces in our building, and also by offering training programmes in our areas of expertise, such as mindfulness and motivation; then we reinvest all the profits back into the organisation to benefit our members, and to cover the costs of running the charity.

We are so lucky to have a wonderful building. Over the years, we have worked hard to create a safe, creative, positive space in which our members feel comfortable and supported. And we want to share this space with others. The building is a fantastic resource which can be used for such a wide range of activities, and our values are reflected in the building itself. From our beautiful, open loft space, to our small, intimate meeting rooms, we hire out our different rooms to cater to all types of events and meetings. You can even hire our games room downstairs and enjoy a game of table tennis or foosball over lunch.

The Body & Soul building was recently featured in a list of ‘venues with big hearts’. What gives the building its big heart?

First off, this is no ordinary office building. As soon as you step inside the front door and are welcomed by our resident bear (you might recognise him from a certain John Lewis Christmas campaign), you know you’re in a special place. The unique feel of the building continues with the pebbled flooring, the felt spots and other splashes of individuality.

One of the other things that makes Body & Soul feel truly like a home is the kitchen and the delicious food that comes out of it: Selina, our fabulously skilled chef has been cooking for us for 20 years. She uses only fresh, seasonal ingredients which are locally sourced, and her food is legendary among members. We offer catering as part of the Brave package, so whether it’s a lunchtime meeting, an all-day event or an evening celebration, we’ll make sure you’re well fed and watered!

Where does the money raised by the Brave initiative go?

All profits are ploughed back into the running of Body & Soul. The proceeds fund everything from our services to staff salaries to maintenance of the building. Social enterprise is absolutely vital to the sustainability of the charitable work we do. Some of the more mundane (but necessary!) aspects of what we do – things like admin, finance and utilities – are not as attractive to funders as the programmes we run for our members, so the money we make from venue hire ensures these areas are kept funded. We therefore take it really seriously and work tirelessly to make sure we are catering to the bespoke needs of the organisations who come to Body & Soul for meetings and events.

Why should an organisation consider Body & Soul for venue hire?

If you are looking for a friendly welcome, a fun and creative space as well as professional service, Body & Soul is the place for you. Also, every penny you spend with us goes straight back into our charity work. Without the money generated by Brave, we would not be able to keep the show on the road and reach the members who think of us as their second home.
