Volunteering at Body & Soul

Posted on: 7th June 2017

The success of the volunteer programme at Body & Soul is down to the efforts of around 80 individuals who regularly donate their time and skills to support our members. These volunteers are integral to all aspects of the services we provide, whether that’s working with children, teens or adults, and whether it’s working with people affected by family disruption, HIV or suicidal behaviour.

To mark the end of Volunteers’ Week 2017 today, Hollie, who runs the volunteer programme, asks two of our volunteers to share their impressions of Body & Soul.

_______________

Stamatina joined our Children’s Services volunteer team six months ago and her experience, enthusiasm and commitment to our work have made her an amazing addition to the team. She works with our young members who have been adopted, and also with our members affected by HIV. Her empathetic and informed approach makes her a hugely valued and popular member of the team. When I asked Stamatina to share a little more about her experience at Body & Soul, here is what she had to say:

“Last summer, I had nearly finished my Child Development master’s at UCL, and was looking for voluntary work. I am interested in working with families and children on a professional level and that was the main reason that I applied to support Body & Soul. From the very first evening, I realised that my time supporting in the Children’s Centre would help me as much as the members.

“The experience has improved my knowledge of the effects of childhood adversity, and continues to do so. On a personal level it has made me more resilient and confident. As soon as you enter the amazing Body & Soul building you always have the feeling that you are not alone, you are welcome and you can be yourself. That is what makes Body & Soul so special.”

Bryony has been volunteering as a qualified nutritionist in our Adult Service for nearly a year, sharing her specialist knowledge with our members. As part of our therapeutic volunteer team Bryony provides one-to-one consultations as well as healthy cooking workshops to small groups. Bryony goes above and beyond to educate our members about the importance of diet to our overall wellbeing. She does this in an approachable and engaging way, and even staff members have her recipes as staples! Bryony explains what her experience at Body & Soul has been like:

“I was recommended to the Body & Soul team by a fellow nutritional therapist who was at the time working with the adult members. I had just graduated and saw the opportunity as a challenge and a chance to put some of my training into practice. I didn’t know exactly what to expect and was a little nervous. However the team were so very welcoming and supportive it was easy to get stuck in and establish a routine.

“On a personal level I find volunteering at Body & Soul very rewarding, inspiring and always challenging. The members here drive me to want to learn more and inspire me to celebrate life as it comes. This drive also helps my professional development in terms of encouraging me to dig further into the field of health from both a dietary and lifestyle point of view. I can incorporate the experience gained here both in my private practice and workshops that I deliver in the corporate sector.”
