Volunteer Profiles: Julia

Posted on: 12th October 2017

Meet Julia, a volunteer who contributes to Body & Soul’s Young Adults program for 19-30 year old individuals living with HIV. Our varied programming, workshops and activities are designed to address key areas of need, including mental and physical health, psychosocial well-being, and productivity.

We are lucky to have had Julia on the team for nearly a year now, sharing her therapeutic massage skills with our Young Adult members. Our members are often living very isolated lives that might be lacking in any form of touch. Julia’s natural warmth and authenticity has allowed members to work through fears of accessing therapeutic services and break down barriers to embrace the benefits.

Here is what she had to share about her experience:

‘I have been volunteering at Body & Soul for nearly a year now. I am a massage therapist and wanted to do volunteering as a way of helping or trying to make a small difference to people’s lives. Body & Soul came up in an advert and I thought “Why not?” So I applied, and I am glad I did! The members and staff have all been so welcoming and friendly. Seeing returning members for massage and being told how well they slept or how relaxed they feel after a massage has been very fulfilling for me. I feel they have given me a greater understanding of living with HIV through sharing conversations and laughs during a therapy session.’

We’re always on the look out for talented volunteers to contribute their skills to our team – take a look to find an opportunity that suits you!
